Don't Get Done Get Dom


As the latest series of BBC One’s,  Don’t Get Done Get Dom hits  our TV screens this Spring, consumer expert Dominic Littlewood takes the mantel once again to  stand up for innocent consumers falling faul of wrong doers.
Espisode 9  of Don’t Get Done Get Dom, features a gentleman who was unhappy with the repairs carried out on his car after an accident. Dominic asks HPI’s Consumer Services Manager – Shane Teskey, whether accidents and repairs could impact the resale value of the car.
In short, as long as the repairs are carried out at a reputable garage and by professionals, there shouldn’t be a problem. If you have had any repair work done to your car, it’s handy to keep a hold of any receipts, as potential buyers can see for themselves that the necessary repairs were carried out – and to the highest standard.
An HPI Check records if the car has been written off by an insurer.  The insurer will have categorised the car as A,B,C,or D.  These categories identify which vehicles can be repaired and returned to the road, or ones that are recommended to be totally scrapped and never allowed back on the road again.

Category A Scrap only – i.e. with few or no economically salvageable parts and of value only for scrap metal e.g. total burnouts.  These vehicles should not appear on the road.
Category B Break for spare parts if economically viable.  These vehicles should not reappear on the road.
Category C Repairable total loss vehicles where repair costs exceed the vehicle’s pre-accident value.
Category D Repairable total loss vehicles where repair costs do not exceed the vehicle’s pre-accident value.

 Shane’s top tips when repairing your car

[dropcap]1[/dropcap]  Ensure any repairs are carried out to the highest quality at a reputable garage.
[dropcap]2[/dropcap]  Take pictures before and after the repair. This shows any prospective buyers in the future the nature of the repair and the quality.
[dropcap]3[/dropcap]  Keep receipts. Again when selling, this shows prospective buyers that genuine repairs were carried out at a high quality.
[dropcap]4[/dropcap]  If you decide to repair a category C or D vehicle, ensure you communicate this to potential buyers when selling. It’s handy to keep this documentation – so buyers can check the quality of the repair.
